2015-2016
In the 2015-16 school year, OFT headed out to Craters of the Moon in Idaho. We toured several of the caves and trails the first night then met with a park ranger the next morning. Our bus broke down outside of Ft. Hall, so we limped to the Shoshone/Bannock Indian Museum. Since we were there for five hours waiting on repairs, we took in the museum and went across the road to the new hotel and gift shop. We finally arrived at Salt Lake City in time to set up camp and then go to the Clark Planetarium. We started Day 3 with a stop at the Family History Library to research family genealogy, followed by a visit to the Natural History Museum of Utah. If you ever get a chance, that is a pretty cool museum. We then spent time at the Hogle Zoo, got a tour of the Utah State Capitol, then closed the day with tours at Temple Square and the Conference Center with its living roof, and a delicious supper at the Diners, Drive-Inns and Dives featured restaurant Moochies. Saturday, we spent the day at Lagoon learning about forces and gravity. It was a cool, sprinkly day so we basically had the place to ourselves. A solid rainstorm set in about the last hour, so we were ready for the Crystal Hot Springs at Honeyville when we arrived for our final night of camping. This particular hot spring has the highest mineral count of any hot springs in the world. It was pouring by the time we got there, so we figured out how we could all sleep on the bus and not have to set up the tents. On our way home the next day, we stopped at Big Springs in Island Park, geocached and enjoyed feeding the fish.
